-- team needed something good to happen. Enter and .Herron blasted a two-run home run that sailed over the bleachers in left field at Jaguar Field Wednesday night and Pilkington added a a run-scoring single shortly afterward in sparking the Jaguars' 3-2 win over Mississippi State at Jaguar Field.USA was coming off back-to-back losses for the first time this season, losses at that. They lost three of four games last week, having also lost at Alabama. Wednesday night's win was a shot int he arm for the No. 15-ranked Jags.MSU didn't make it easy. The Bulldogs responded with a run in the fifth and another in the top of the seventh. In fact, the Bulldogs had a runner on third when South Alabama recorded the third out of the inning and final out of the game."Yes they did (make us work for it),'' South Alabama head coach said. "It was a good game. The biggest thing is I'm proud of our club for bouncing back. We had a rough week last week and I thought we got some things figured out. The kids were really good, I thought, at the plate early on. We were very balanced, we let our hands work and we weren't pressing and that's something we've been trying to get. So I'm proud of them for coming back. We got good pitching and we got good defense.''The Jags improved to 31-6 overall with the win, setting the stage for this weekend's visit to Louisiana-Lafayette for a Sun Belt Conference showdown between the league's top two teams. Lafayette currently is in first place, with the Jags in second."This was a great start to the week,'' Clark said. "We know what we've got ahead of us and this week was a big week for us. We know that we've got a good SEC team and then Lafayette this weekend, and we were on our home field too and we needed to get it done here.''The win pushed the Jags' home record to 13-0 this season.Alex Breeden hit a one-out double to left-center in the second and Alyssa Linn entered the game to pinch run. It wouldn't matter who was on the base because Herron's blast allowed both to trot home. Taylor Rodgers was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch and with two outs, Pilkington delivered a single up the middle that scored Rodgers for a 3-0 lead.Farish Beard pitched the first four innings, allowing just two hits, no runs and two walks while striking out three. Hannah Campbell entered the game int he fifth. She hit the first batter she faced. Loryn Nichols, and Alison Owen attempted a sacrifice bunt, but Campbell threw wildly to first in an attempt to get the force out and instead Nichols scored and Owen advanced to third. But Campbell retired the next two batters. In the seventh, Kayla Winkfield singled to lead off the inning, followed by a Nichols single and a Jessica Offutt bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Heidi Shape hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Winkfield and trimmed USA's advantage to one run. But Campbell got a groundout from Sam Lenahan and a fly out from Logan Foulks to end the threat and the game."Just get them both a little bit of work,'' Clark said of her decision to use both Berard and Campbell in the circle. "My plan was to try to get Farish through the lineup twice and the third time we went through, let (MSU) see a little different look. ... That way nobody gets too many innings in the mid-week (game) and they're ready to go this weekend.''Pilkington was 2 for 3 for the Jags with Herron, Breeden and Chloe Rathburn getting one hit each, though Herron's carried a bit more weight than the others. Campbell allowed two runs, one of them earned, and three hits while issuing no walks and getting no strikeouts in three innings of work. Beard is now 17-3 on the year and Campbell picked up her fourth save.
