MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The state Board of Education today recognized Spain Park High School in Hoover as Alabama's nominee for the ACT College and Career Transition Award.
ACT, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people achieve an education and success in the workplace, gives the award to a high school based on numerous factors, including its aggregate ACT college entrance exam scores and the percentage of students reaching ACT benchmarks for success in college English, math, reading and science courses.
Other factors considered include: improvement in the percentage of students reaching those benchmark scores; success in serving students of underrepresented racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; dedication to ensuring students are prepared for success after high school; and leadership opportunities for students outside the classroom.
ACT next will review nominees from the eight states participating in the organization's College and Career Readiness Campaign: Alabama, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
ACT will select four national semifinalists, and then a national selection committee comprised of education and workforce development leaders will pick one honoree for national recognition. The national award recipient will be recognized at the ACT National Gala on College and Career Readiness in Washington, D.C., on June 3.
ACT also gives out awards for student readiness (to an individual student that has overcome adversity or extraordinary circumstances to achieve success), career preparedness (to a college or university) and career success (to a company that has a good relationship with high schools or colleges and uses career readiness assessments for recruitment and career advancement for employees).
