Nearly a year ago, I wrote a letter to PennLive saying all I wanted for Mother s Day was expanded background checks on gun purchases. I m still waiting.
Pennsylvania has strong, comprehensive background checks on the majority of gun sales in our state. However, private sales of long guns are not covered. A felon who would be prohibited from purchasing a handgun can turn to a garage sale, the internet, or a newspaper to purchase a military-style rifle through a private sale.
It is against federal law for a felon to have a gun, but with this loophole, we make it easy for a criminal to obtain one. Background checks help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Expanded background checks would enforce this Federal law.
In the state legislature, there is currently an amendment on HB 1243 that will close this loophole, but it has yet to be brought up for a vote. Polls have shown that the majority of gun owners and non gun owners support expanding background checks. What are our legislators waiting for?
If you d like to see HB 1243 move forward for a vote, call your state rpresentative. Let them know that background checks deserve a vote in Pennsylvania.
